Just picture the scene - fairy cakes, fairy lights, everyone dressed up with wings and wands... fairy heaven!

How to Make a Fairy Garden for Children

Okay, so I've talked a lot about fairies and attracting them to a fairy garden. But what about those of you who just want to make a garden for your kids to play in? Don't worry, I've lots of tips for you too! Having worked with children in the past I know how passionate they can be about the environment, and this is the perfect opportunity to teach them more about it. If you make a children's fairy garden for your kids, you'll have the chance to:

Teach them about nature, gardening, the environment, flowers and science
Spark their imagination through games, play, writing, drawing, crafts, role-play and dressing up
Get them involved in projects, such as building a bird house or growing their own food

Working with Fairies

Today I want to go back to the topic of seeing fairies. Aside from the sheer delight of knowing there are fairies in your garden, once you learn how to experience fairies, you can work with them to bring harmony, protection and good fortune to your household. But don't go rushing into this... fairies are wary of humans and will only choose to work with you if you have already taken the time and effort to prove to them the following:

You respect them (and their privacy)
You respect nature
You work hard to protect the planet
You have joy, love and laughter in your heart
You love Mother Earth and your garden unconditionally!

Types of Garden Fairies

Before I talk more about how to see fairies in the garden, I ought to perhaps explain who the garden fairies actually are!

You may well be thinking "flower fairies" at this point, but there are more to garden fairies than pretty little winged girls floating about!

How to See Fairies

As I mentioned yesterday, one of the most common questions I get asked in response to my fairy writings is "how to see fairies". Now, this is not a question with a straightforward answer, as there is much to explain about the nature of fairies and how they appear. But in this post I will begin to tell you how to see fairies in the garden, as this is an excellent place to start.

First of all, here are two articles that give an introduction to seeing and working with the Faerie Realm:

Now, as to the fairies. They exist on the astral plane (the above articles explain this further) and consequently cannot generally be seen with the physical eye. They do, on occasion, make themselves appear to humans, but this is rare. It is more common for those who work with fairies to "see" them with the third eye, or mind's eye, through the power of clairvoyance. Have a read of this article to understand how this works:

How to Communicate with Spirits

One of the best ways to develop a link with the fairies is to sit quietly in your garden, or a secluded spot in nature, and meditate upon communicating with them. Sit by water or under an old tree. Don't force anything and have patience - it can take time to open up the mind to seeing, hearing or experiencing fairies.

The garden is a good place to do this because it means you can work on this regularly - every day if possible. Don't expect a fairy to appear right in front of you - their presence is much more subtle! You might receive an image in your mind of a fairy creature. If it doesn't look anything like you expected, that's a good sign - it means the image is flowing into your mind naturally, and is not being conjured up by your imagination! You might hear whispers or random words, or become aware of a sudden heat or cold. It is a good idea to write down your experiences in a journal so that you can refer back to previous encounters.

How to Attract Fairies to Your Garden

Yesterday I talked about choosing a design for your garden. Today, I'm going to get you thinking about how to attract fairies to your garden!

Once you have chosen your initial design, you will undoubtedly be thinking...

What flowers do I plant?
What can I put in my garden that is appealing to fairies?
Do I put out statues of fairies or do they not like that?
What can I do to make my garden fairy-friendly?

Of course, where there are flowers, there will be fairies. But the number of fairies in your garden depends on how natural it is (chemicals equals poorly fairies!!), how well you tend your plants, and whether you truly care about your garden.

Fairies are fiercely protective of the natural world, so anything you do to help protect Mother Nature will bring fairies into your garden in leaps and bounds, as they will be delighted to have found a human who is kind to the planet. Organic gardening, helping wildlife, feeding the birds and not using pesticides all help to attract fairies in abundance.

How to Make a Fairy Garden

One of the first things to learn about how to make a fairy garden is that you need to know the right things, but once you do, it is fun, fulfilling and very magical!

The first step is to decide what kind of design you are after. I love cottage gardens and wildflower meadows, so I chose a lot of cottage garden flowers for my borders, and then selected a section of the garden to allow to go wild, and sowed some wildflower seeds. A wildflower meadow is wonderfully low maintenance - once it is established, all you have to do is cut it with a scythe once a year!

There are all kinds of themes that fairies will like - as long as they are natural, fairly wild, and preferably organic, the fairies will love living there! Ideas include:

A romantic garden
A herb garden
A Gothic garden
A scented garden
A cottage garden
A wildflower meadow
A rock garden

Take into consideration your local area, the type of soil you have, and the wildflowers that are native to your country.

Do you want to know how to make a fairy garden? I'm guessing that if you've found this site, then you do!

There are lots of reasons you might want to do this. You may want to work with the Faerie Realm, and so wish to attract fairies to your garden. Or you simply want to make a fairy garden because you love fairies! Or perhaps you have children who love fairies, and want to know how to make a children's fairy garden.
